Hiking in Extreme weather
For extreme cold winter hiking, prioritize a three-layer system (moisture-wicking base, insulating mid-layer, waterproof/windproof shell), avoid cotton, and use gaiters to keep snow out. Carry extra layers, hand warmers, and a warm beverage. Protect extremities with insulated boots, hats, and mittens, and keep hydrated to prevent cold-related illnesses.
Essential Gear and Techniques
• Layering: Wear Merino wool or synthetic base layers, a fleece or puffer middle layer, and a breathable, windproof, waterproof shell (e.g., Gore-Tex).
• Extremity Protection: Wear thermal socks, a beanie, and a neck gaiter. Use thick mittens, which are warmer than gloves, or carry glove liners for dexterity.
• Footwear: Use insulated, waterproof hiking boots paired with crampons or snowshoes for stability. Ensure boots are not too tight to allow for circulation.
• Gear: Trekking poles, sunglasses or goggles, a thermos with hot water, and a foam pad for sitting on snow.
